Ace Burpee

Ace is not only well-known for his engaging presence on 103.1 Virgin Radio but also for his extensive philanthropic efforts. Over the years, he has become a prominent figure in Manitoba's charitable community, using his platform to support numerous causes, including mental health awareness, poverty alleviation, and local food banks. He frequently collaborates with organizations like the United Way, Rainbow Resource Centre and the Winnipeg Humane Society, and has hosted and participated in countless fundraisers, charity runs, and events. His dedication to giving back has earned him widespread recognition, cementing his role as a community leader who consistently champions causes that uplift and support those in need.

Award Presentation

The Dr. Dick Smith Appreciation Award is bestowed to an individual(s) or organization that embodies Dr Smith's lasting legacy of making an impact for the 2SLGBTTQ+ community and promotes a part of the mission of Our Own Health Centre to improve the health and well-being of the 2SLGBTTQ+ community.

Criteria

  1. Ally or member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community

  2. Has made a substantial difference to OOHC through fundraising support, volunteering or bring awareness of the organization

2024 Recipient: Kevin Selch

Kevin Selch is the President and Founder of Little Brown Jug Brewing Company. Under his leadership, Little Brown Jug has been a strong supporter of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, sponsoring key organizations and events such as Our Own Health, Pride Winnipeg, and the Rainbow Resource Centre. The brewery also provides a welcoming, inclusive space for both customers and employees by offering training and hosting diverse community-focused events. Kevin believes in building the city we want to live in, and fostering inclusivity is central to his vision for a better Winnipeg.

  • Stephen Haiko-Pena

    VOCALIST & PIANIST

    Stephen Haiko-Pena is a performer, composer and teacher of voice and piano. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba where he studied voice and piano. He has performed extensively as a solo musician and with various groups including the Manitoba Opera, The Little Opera Company, Underground Opera, The Gilbert and Sullivan Society and Canzona.

  • Aaron Hutton, tenor

    Aaron Hutton

    VOCALIST

    Manitoba-born and award-winning singer Aaron Hutton is one of the province’s most eclectic artists. A versatile performer with a résumé ranging from Baroque to Contemporary Musical Theatre, Aaron has become a sought after crossover vocalist. He has performed numerous times with Rainbow Stage, Manitoba Theatre Centre, and as a soloist with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Having been recognized as "a wonderfully talented tenor" (CBC) and “one of Winnipeg’s busiest musical chameleons” (Winnipeg Free Press), Aaron continues to make a name for himself as a formidable vocalist in Manitoba.

    Born and raised amidst the vibrant culture of Winnipeg, Vance Masters Jr has emerged as a dynamic force in the city's electronic music scene. With an innate passion for beats, a keen ear for melodies, and an unwavering dedication to his craft, Vance has etched his name as a respected DJ and music producer.

  • Joseph Sevillo

    PERFORMER

    Joseph is a dynamic performer known for his versatility in music, theatre, and dance. With a passion for the arts, Joseph has captivated audiences across Manitoba with his powerful stage presence and creative talent. He has been involved in numerous productions, showcasing his ability to blend genres and engage with diverse audiences. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, Joseph's dedication to his craft and his vibrant performances have earned him a respected place in Winnipeg’s arts community.

  • Margot Harding

    Margot Harding

    SOPRANO

    Margot holds a Bachelor of Music in opera from the University of British Columbia and won a national scholarship to study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. During her six months there, she performed widely in Austria and Germany, including a standout last-minute performance as the Queen of the Night at the Landestheater in Salzburg. Her career has featured performances with major organizations including the Salzburg Opera, Manitoba Opera, Vancouver Opera, the Winnipeg Symphony, Carnegie Hall, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, the National Arts Centre, Rainbow Stage, and has been featured on CBC and Bravo's Arts and Minds.

  • John Himes

    John Himes

    SUNDOG ENSEMBLE

    John Himes is a classical guitarist, arranger, and adjudicator with a background in classical and contemporary performance. Born and raised in Western New York, John’s passion for expanding the guitar’s solo and collaborative repertoire brought him to Winnipeg, where he most recently earned a master’s degree in music performance (classical guitar) at the University of Manitoba. John earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia before moving to Manitoba. 

  • Chris Byman

    Chris Byman

    SUNDOG ENSEMBLE

    Born and raised on the Manitoban prairies, Canadian clarinetist, clinician, and composer Chris Byman obtained B.Mus and M.Mus degrees from Brandon University, where he studied clarinet performance and literature. As a freelance artist, Chris has collaborated with musicians across Canada and has performed locally as a sessional musician with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Canadian Air Force Band, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Winnipeg, and the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival.

  • Duncan Cox

    Duncan Cox

    GUITAR

    Composer, Music Director, Collaborator, Performer

    Duncan Cox (he/him) is a musical artist who works primarily as a composer/lyricist with a focus on the genres of folk/rock, storytelling, and musical theatre. A self taught multi-instrumentalist, he plays a seemingly endless swath of instruments that get more obscure the longer you spend with him. Duncan is proud to work professionally through the country as an actor (Rainbow Stage/MTC) as well as in the music scene playing/singing with various groups in addition to his solo act. On a personal note, he enjoys kayaking and a good hash brown casserole when the weather permits.
